Soul (2020)

Summary
This film has a magical plot, beautiful animation, imaginative and mindblowing concepts and settings, and a meaningful message.

What's it about?
Joe Gardener falls to his death down the sewer drain. Not ready to die yet, Joe tries to escape the great beyond but he falls into the before life dimension where he encounters souls receiving their personalities before they can go to planet earth. Will Joe Gardener ever make it back to Earth, or will he have to make it to the great beyond?

The good bits
I thought it had lovely music with a mixture of jazz and modern pop style music. The animation was both realistic and traditional, with typical Disney-Pixar style. The voice acting was excellent, with the actors really delving into the characters' feelings and goals and communicating these convincingly.

The bad bits
There was nothing I can remember that I didn't like about soul.

What is it similar to?
Just like with Coco, Soul delved into the afterlife world but in a more modern, less traditional setting, being set in New York City rather than Mexico. There are fewer scenes taking place in the afterlife than in Coco. Inside Out had pretty similar concept and music to Soul but it didn't explore the concept of death as deeply. Corpse Bride is a darker film with similar concepts.

Oscar's recommendation
Soul made me learn more about life, and the importance of life. It made me feel hopeful for the future that I don't have to worry or feel anxious about my goals in life, and I just have to enjoy life the way it is. Ambition is not the most important thing in life.

Parent/carer alerts
Swearing
There was a scene in which Joe Gardener, in the before life world, he accidentally says the word “Hell” and then many of the unborn souls who are collecting their personalities repeat the word over and over. The word "Crap" gets mentioned once, as well as "Imbecile", "Idiot", and "Piss". There was also two scenes in which the lord's name was mentioned in vain. There were also mentions of "My life was meaningless", "Meh", "Idiot", "Selfish", "Self-absorbed", "You ruin everything" and "You have no purpose".

Violence
When Soul number 22 takes Joe to the Hall of Everything and demonstrates that souls can't taste, touch or smell, it slaps Joe repeatedly to demonstrate that he can't feel it. Joe falls into the sewer to his death but tries to find a way to resurrect himself, though he dies off screen. We get to see a brief glimpse of his corpse. When Joe Gardener falls into a cat's body and Soul 22 falls into Joe Gardener's body, some people might be creeped out at 22 inside Joe's body in a hospital bed, and about how 22 tries to move around in Joe's body which some people might find quite graphic, even though there was no needles or blood shown.

Fear
Some people might be scared of the lost souls in the Lost Souls world due to their creepy character designs and how they walk around moaning like zombies. Some people might be anxious to know whether or not Joe might go back to the real world and to his body in the end (see spoilers). The film was not really frightening, though some people might be creeped out by the main antagonist, a character named Terry who finds that Joe Gardener is missing from the dead souls entering the great beyond and looks for him everywhere in the real world. There was also a scene in which Joe enters lost soul 22's demon form where a monstros version of Joe vomits on soul Joe. Death is a major theme of the film, as well as life, and purpose which some people might be uncomfortable with.
